Tangent keys – a heavy-duty connection between shaft and hub for extreme torques
Tangent keys are specially designed machine components used for the positive transmission of torque between a shaft and a hub. Unlike traditional keys, they are installed in pairs facing each other, thereby acting tangentially to the shaft surface. This unique design enables the transmission of high torque while simultaneously ensuring optimal stress distribution within the shaft. As a result, tangential keys are primarily used in heavy machinery and large-scale plant construction, where extreme mechanical demands are involved. That is why quality matters when purchasing tangential keys—and this is exactly where we come in. As an experienced manufacturer in CNC machining, we have been committed to genuine quality since 1955. In addition to standardized tangent keys in accordance with DIN 268, we also offer custom-made products tailored to your specific requirements. A wide variety of materials is available from stock. Additionally, you can decide whether you need the tangent keys with or without heat treatment.
What is a tangent wedge?
Tangential keys are wedge-shaped connecting elements with a rectangular cross-section that—unlike most other keys—are positioned tangentially to the shaft rather than radially. In everyday practice, two tangential keys are always used; they are positioned opposite each other and thus work together to transmit torque. They are manufactured in accordance with DIN 268, which defines the dimensions, wedge angles, tolerances, and arrangement. Installation and removal of tangential wedges are significantly more complex than with classic flat wedges or nose wedges; however, they are specifically suited for high-load applications and can also effectively transmit high torques. Torque is transmitted via positive engagement along the flanks of the two keys and is distributed evenly across the shaft due to the symmetrical paired arrangement. This prevents unilateral radial loading of the shaft and significantly reduces the notch effect compared to single keys. Tangent keys therefore offer a high degree of reliability even under fluctuating and shock loads.

Standards and Dimensions of Tangent Wedges
Standard tangent wedges are manufactured in accordance with DIN 268 and thus comply with an international standard to ensure a high degree of global compatibility. They are designated by their height, width, and length, which refer to the individual wedge. However, the key factor for applicability is always the paired arrangement of the tangent keys. Typical materials used for manufacturing include quenched and tempered steel (e.g., C45 or higher-strength steels) or case-hardened steel for high surface pressures—due to the high torque transmission, tangent keys must be durable and robust. The machining of the grooves in the shaft and hub is considered particularly complex and critical in terms of precision. Both keys must be precisely aligned with each other, which makes assembly somewhat more challenging. Only with precise alignment can high load-bearing capacity be ensured.

Advantages of Tangent Keys
Tangent keys conforming to DIN 268 and custom-made designs offer a wide range of benefits that play a key role in everyday applications, particularly in heavy machinery and large-scale plant engineering:
- High torque transmission: The symmetrical arrangement of the tangent keys enables high torque transmission
- Even force distribution: The forces acting between the shaft and hub are evenly distributed by the tangent keys
- High fatigue strength: Tangent keys have a low notch effect and thus offer a high degree of fatigue strength
- High reliability: Tangent keys are well-suited for reversing loads and offer a high degree of operational reliability even under regular shock loads
To benefit from the advantages of tangent keys, you should prioritize quality during manufacturing—only when tangent keys are properly manufactured in accordance with DIN 268 or custom-made to your specifications can you benefit from the high level of safety and other advantages. The base material should also be suited to your specific needs.
